Tiny Baby sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇs By His Twins Brother’s Power Who Was Three Times His ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ At Birth

The parents of a tiny baby believe his sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴀʟ is down to an ᴜɴʙʀᴇᴀᴋᴀʙʟᴇ ʙᴏɴᴅ with his twin brother, who was three times his ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ at birth.

Chester and Otis Graves were both ᴘʀᴇᴍᴀᴛᴜʀᴇʟʏ born at 28 weeks this summer, but at just 1LB, Chester was left Fɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ for his life. The pair’s sɪᴢᴇ difference can be seen when they cuddle in hospital – something parents Kelly and Billy Graves believe has helped Chester keep Fɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ.

After six weeks, Otis was ᴅɪsᴄʜᴀʀɢᴇᴅ and now ᴡᴇɪɢʜs 6lb 3oz – up from 3lb 7oz at birth, but little Chester has Fᴏᴜɢʜᴛ Fᴏʀ ʜɪs ʟɪFᴇ since birth and still only ᴡᴇɪɢʜs 3lb 6oz. The ‘miracle twins’ can be seen laying side by side in the neonatal unit at Southend Hospital – though they only met for the first time since birth last month.

They are so lucky that Chester is a Fɪɢʜᴛᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴅᴇsᴘɪᴛᴇ everything he has been through, he is still Fɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ in order to come home and be with his parents, Otis and the rest of the family. His twin came home after 46 days, but Chester had to sᴛᴀʏ ᴘᴜᴛ ᴏɴ ʜɪɢʜ Fʟᴏᴡ ᴏxʏɢᴇɴ ᴀɴᴅ ɪɴᴄᴜʙᴀᴛɪᴏɴ, with his parents driving from Cambridge to Southend to visit the babies and then back home to see their other children.

Though Chester has not met his other siblings, the twins finally met for the first time since being born on September 22.

Kelly said: ‘It was everything I was waiting for, and although Otis was asleep, Chester was ᴏʙsᴇssᴇᴅ with him and couldn’t take his eyes away from his brother. I have no doubt that cuddles with his twin has helped him keep Fɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ.’Chester’s ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ ᴘʀᴏʙʟᴇᴍs first became apparent at a 16-week sᴄᴀɴ, when the babies differed in sɪᴢᴇ by 25 per cent – something that ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇʀɴᴇᴅ the doctors. The disparity was due to a ᴄᴏɴᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴ ᴄᴀʟʟᴇᴅ Sᴇʟᴇᴄᴛɪᴠᴇ Iɴᴛʀᴀᴜᴛᴇʀɪɴᴇ. Gʀᴏᴡᴛʜ Rᴇsᴛʀɪᴄᴛɪᴏɴ, which resulted in Chester not receiving the ʀᴇǫᴜɪʀᴇᴅ ɴᴜᴛʀɪᴇɴᴛs from the  ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇɴᴛᴀ, ʜᴀʟᴛɪɴɢ his growth.

At 19 weeks, Kelly ʜᴀᴅ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ᴀᴅᴍɪᴛᴛᴇᴅ to London’s Kings College Hospital for ʟᴀsᴇʀ sᴜʀɢɪᴄᴀʟ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ.

She explained: ‘I had to ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴇɴᴅᴏsᴄᴏᴘɪᴄ ʟᴀsᴇʀ sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ, ᴡʜᴇʀᴇʙʏ the enter the womb through the side of your body in order to reach the ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇɴᴛᴀ and ᴋɪʟʟ off the  ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴠᴇssᴇʟs ᴄᴏɴɴᴇᴄᴛɪɴɢ the two babies. The sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ was ᴘᴇʀFᴏʀᴍᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ sᴇᴘᴀʀᴀᴛᴇ the babies in the womb so that if Chester hadn’t sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇᴅ it would have ᴘʀᴏᴛᴇᴄᴛᴇᴅ Oᴛɪs from ᴅʏɪɴɢ or being ʟᴇFᴛ with ʟᴀsᴛɪɴɢ ʙʀᴀɪɴ ᴅᴀᴍᴀɢᴇ.”

After the sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ, Kelly and Billy were told Chester was sᴛɪʟʟ ᴏɴʟʏ ɢʀᴏᴡɪɴɢ ᴀʀᴏᴜɴᴅ 25g a week, whereas Otis was gaining roughly 100g a week.

She added: ‘I was being told at every sᴄᴀɴ that he may not sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ ᴡʜɪᴄʜ ᴡᴀs ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ-ʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ.’

Chester’s ᴄᴏɴᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴ sᴛᴀʙɪʟɪsᴇᴅ before Kelly was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to give birth, with Chester weighing 485g.

His mum said: ‘(The ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ) was close to being ᴅᴇᴇᴍᴇᴅ ᴠɪᴀʙʟᴇ, but we were told his ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ʀᴀᴛᴇ ᴋᴇᴘᴛ ᴅɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ and that the  ᴄʜᴀɴᴄᴇs of sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴀʟ from the ᴄᴀᴇsᴀʀᴇᴀɴ could be low’”

Otis was born first and immediately ᴠᴇɴᴛɪʟᴀᴛᴇᴅ Fᴏʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ sᴜᴄᴄᴇssFᴜʟ C-sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ, but Chester had to be sᴛᴀʙɪʟɪsᴇᴅ, ʜᴀᴠɪɴɢ becom very  ᴡᴇᴀᴋ. Medics found a ᴋɴᴏᴛ in his ᴜᴍʙɪʟɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴏʀᴅ which had been sᴛᴜɴᴛɪɴɢ ʜɪs ɢʀᴏᴡᴛʜ. ‘Thankfully they were ᴀʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴠᴇɴᴛɪʟᴀᴛᴇ him and ever since he has been Fɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ multiple issues’ Kelly explained. Chester has ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇᴅ Nᴇᴄʀᴏᴛɪsɪɴɢ Eɴᴛᴇʀᴏᴄᴏʟɪᴛɪs, ᴀ sᴇʀɪᴏᴜs ᴄᴏɴᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴ where ᴛɪssᴜᴇ in the bowel becomes  ɪɴFʟᴀᴍᴇᴅ, a hole in his  ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ and an eye problem which needed sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ. But his condition has steadily improved.
